El Horizonte Se Rebalsa
2023
In the exhibition El Horizonte Se Rebalsa / The Horizon Overflows, Camila Rodrigo asks us to consider the wisdom from nature and the ancestors who came before us. She brings together two seemingly disparate concepts and images: bold, colorful representations of the mycelium networks of the fungi kingdom and documentary-style photos of two sacred Huacas (ancient Peruvian sites) built by early indigenous populations of the Incan Empire.
The artist transports us to the sacred site El Salitre (Mala, Peru) by wheatpasting directly onto the museum walls—at the height of where the Schoharie River waters flooded the Zadock Pratt Museum during Hurricane Irene in 2011. Through this poetic gesture of bridging the global south to the global north, the artist pays homage to water as connector, conduit, and untameable force.
How can we strengthen our collective resiliency in the midst of a changing climate? How do we find a sustainable balance between our relationship with the land and past wisdom?
