Micelio I

(Ongoing project)

Mycelium I reflects on the future and the transcendence of life within the context of the climate crisis. The project questions Western thought, grounded in humanism and the hegemony of scientific knowledge, which generates forms of discrimination, limitations, and blockages when attempting to imagine possible futures. As an ongoing investigation, this project seeks to open fissures from which to rehearse other ways of thinking about and inhabiting the world.

Mycelium I is conceived as a continuous exercise that tests new alternatives and tools for relating to the environment and to the beings that inhabit it from different perspectives. A small crack that allows us to imagine a new discursive order—one that breaks with hierarchies, embraces the diversity of knowledges, and acknowledges multispecies relationships.

The project seeks to cultivate a deeper relationship with the fungi kingdom, beings that contribute new forms of knowledge through their capacity for collective work with other species and their strategies for adaptation to extreme environments. Through an adaptation of the scientific technique of spore printing, Rodrigo focuses on small changes, pauses, deaths, and the imperceptible aspects of these beings’ existence. This exploration of the fungi kingdom invites us to rethink our relationship with other living beings, questioning the cultural order that shapes our understanding of nature and time.
